EILEEN GRAY WAS AN ABSOLUTELY AMAZING ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER, BUT HER WORK IS OFTEN OVERSHADOWED BY THE WORK OF HER MALE COUNTERPARTS.
THIS IS NOT BECAUSE THEIR WORK IS BETTER, BUT SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE WAS A WOMAN IN A MALE-DOMINATED CRAFT.
TOWARDS THE END OF HER LIFE, IN INTERVIEWS, EILEEN CLAIMED SHE FELT "FORGOTTEN." THIS GOAL OF THIS EXHIBITION IS TO NOT ONLY DRAW ATTENTION TO THE WORK AND PROSPERITY OF GRAY, BUT OF ALL WOMEN WHO STILL TODAY STRUGGLE TO BE NOTICED IN MALE-DOMINATED CAREERS.
HER PIECES AREN'T EASY TO VIEW IN THIS EXHIBITION. I WANTED THE VIEWER TO HAVE TO WORK HARD TO VIEW HER WORK, JUST AS SHE HAD TO WORK EXTRA HARD TO BE NOTICED AT ALL IN HER CRAFT.
ALL PIECES ARE HIDDEN BEHIND THIN WALLS WITH TINY HOLES THROUGHOUT. VIEWING THE WORK REQUIRES THE VIEWER TO INTERACT WITH THE EXHIBIT AND LOOK THROUGH THE SMALL HOLES TO REVEAL THE WORK BEING ROTATED SLOWLY AND WELL ILLUMINATED AS SEEN BELOW.
